This typical semi-aquatic animal is a common inhabitant of the Danube anywhere where there is an abundance of its food - fish, amphibians, and small birds. Although it is generally believed to live only in fast, clear, mountain streams, research has found that it usually goes into slow-flowing rivers like the Danube, if there are enough food and hiding places in and around the river.
