Kostolac / Viminacium

This was the largest urban center and the capital of Upper Moesia. Also of significance was the military center, a permanent camp of legion VII Claudia. Municipal status was assigned to a community of Roman citizens at the time of Hadrian, and the status of the colony Viminacium got under Gordian III, probably in 239 AD. The town experienced the biggest boom at the time of Septimius Severus, while in the fourth century AD it became the Episcopal center. A military camp on the right bank of the Mlava River existed until the middle of the fifth century, while a small fort was built on the left bank in the sixth century.
